Where to Start

At the beginning.

It sounds really unhelpful but it does help you get used to working backwards in time. So you start with yourself -

Where you were born, the year you were born, the name on your birth certificate, if you're married dig out your marriage certificate etc. Once you have everything regarding yourself, move onto your brothers and sisters if you have any, then your parents. If you still have living grandparents, bombard them with questions about their relatives and their parents names etc. Basically collect every bit of information together you possibly can.

If you have photographs, gather them together. These are often important as they sometimes have dates or names scribbled on the back which can aid in the search for elusive births etc.

If you have hit a brick wall, then perhaps I can help you. I live close to Wooton Hall records office in Northampton and have access to several genealogy websites. Please feel free to contact me and I will search on your behalf, if I don't find anything you don't get charged. Simple as that.
